Obesity governance

Project: 11-2009-05
Project leader: Kjærnes, Unni

EU project: The theme of the project is the growing obesity in Europe. The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing in Europe. The method for dealing with this tendency is cooperation between central actors as the food industry; retailers, governmental agencies and NGOs, and the project will make an evaluation of recent national co-operations in Europe. These experiences are representing different regulating regimes and we distinguish between: 1) Anglo-American models (UK), 2) the Nordic model (Denmark and Norway), 3) The continental model and 4) The East-European model (Spain). Our goal is to improve the quality of the supply of healthy food. Consumers need new windows of opportunities to change food habits, and these windows may be created within a stakeholder approach; involving food industry, retailers, NGOs and governmental institutions. The project will also increase knowledge and make a vital contribution to future targeted research. The innovative part of the project is to link the discussion about obesity to the recent trends in new governance.
